THIS WILL BE OUR FIRST TOUR WITH A WOMAN ART COLLECTOR. Molly Barnes will talk about her experience as a gallery owner, her passion for collecting, how she acquired certain pieces and what she loved about them at first sight. She has many great stories to share about the artists and the artwork. Her collection includes David Amico, Don Bachardy, Judy Chicago, Mary Corse, Ron Davis, Jim DeFrance, Phyllis Herfield, George Herms, Ellsworth Kelly, Willem de Kooning, Mark Kostabi, Jim Morphesis, Alice Neel, Claus Oldenburg, Ray Parker, Niki de Saint Phalle, Judy Stabile, Rachel Rosenthal, Ann Thornycroft and Andy Warhol.

MOLLY BARNES is a well-known gallery owner, art critic and art collector who helped to shape the Los Angeles art scene from the 1960s to the present by discovering and introducing artists to the public. She represented Willem de Kooning, Ray Parker and Robert Cottingham, and launched the careers of Mark Kostabi, Gronk and John Baldessari. Barnes is generally credited with discovering the photo-realism movement. She is an expert in contemporary art and has appeared on national television and public radio for 20 years commenting on the art world. She has her own Los Angeles radio show on KCSN 88.5 FM.

Barnes has curated important art collections including those of director Billy Wilder and Normal Lear. In 1994, she published How to Get Hung: A Practical Guide for Emerging Artists. Artworks from her private collection were on view at Pharmaka Gallery in downtown Los Angeles from April 10 – May 31, 2008 and were accompanied by a catalog. She currently has a show of her “New York Collection” at the Roger Smith Hotel in New York, where she has been an art consultant and curator for the past 20 years.

From 2002 through 2005 she was the Program Director of “Artists Talk on Art” at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. She also holds a monthly salon in Los Angeles, California. A founding member of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, she is an icon in the arts both in New York City and in Los Angeles. Barnes shares her bi-coastal life with her artist/designer husband, Mauro Caputo.
